Oct 17, 2014·It does not harden without the carbon. That being said, I think it unlikely that a smith would go to the trouble to forge the shaft of the chisel hexagonal and then steel the bit. I think this is a modern piece of steel, drawn to a hex and hardened on the bit. It is probably something like 1040-1050 carbon steel and would make a modest knife blade.
